Wake up, it's another disaster....

I'm really hating waking up to bad news.

Columbia broke up over Texas, all presumed dead.

My conspiracy theorist side is having a field day.

Probable reason, though, is Congressional cheapness in cutting funding for the space program. Nevermind that the space program has driven most of our technological advances since at least the 1960s - materials, miniaturization, medical science... But the short sighted fools in Congress don't see it, and have seldom seen it.

Even with this, if you asked me if I wanted to go, I'd jump at the chance. Space exploration is the pressure relief valve for our civilization.

Oh, how much I agree!

Space exploration is the pressure relief valve for our civilization.
What an interesting perspective! When somebody asks me, what I think humankind exists for, I usually reply, to find out how things are. As you can read in my LJ, the Columbia disaster has quite an impact on me. Very, very sad to think, that the short-cut of money was fundamentally involved in this, possibly preventing the development of more reliable heat-shields, flight-stabilizers, whatever caused this catastrophe.

I mourn for the dead astronauts, the heroes that gave their life for science.

Short-sighted, those opponents to the space program, indeed.
