Swine Flu - Interesting Article

Swine flu fatal to local cancer nurse

Read past the first part that talks about the nurse.

Apparently this thing can rapidly sink otherwise healthy people. It is probably a more dangerous variant.

Be careful, wash your hands, buy stock in Purell.

She had H1N1, pneumonia *and* MRSA. That's, uh, quite impressive.

I hate to say it, but Superman would be hard-pressed to survive that kind of trifecta. MRSA alone can kill people (ask me some time about when my dad contracted MRSA while we were taking care of my mother in hospice... on the other hand, DON'T)

I would *definitely* be wondering about that hospital's infection control practices, oh yes.

It's interesting to compare the reporting/coverage of H1N1 here as to how it's covered in the UK. Over there, the sky is falling (much as it is with MRSA) whereas here, the spin-doctors are (perhaps rather desperately) pushing a "just be careful and we'll all be okay" kind of message (just like they do with MRSA). It's certainly a bit worrying, but not necessarily for the obvious reasons... *sigh*

Thing is...reading between the lines she caught those all at the same time. So my thinking is that the H1N1 compromised her immune system, and then she picked up the other two at work, since they are the sort of bugs you'd find floating around a hospital.

Which would be a new trick for it.

This is scary. Seriously so.

Yeah, it's looking more and more like the 1918 pandemic - strikes young, healthy people; prevalent in the summer, which means med folk are anticipating a big surge in the flu during the fall.
Hope to hell it's not as bad as it was.

Hmm...they usually say that of a bug mutates it does so to a less lethal form..but this one seems to be following the same route as the 1918 flu, which started off realtivily harmless, then mutated into a more lethal form.

and if it's capable of causing immunio-suppression, which the multiple infections implies..then it's a really scary beasty!
