No WorldCon Unless I Get Work Real Soon

Being now unemployed, my plans for WorldCon in Reno are in ruins. This sucks because it was going to be a belated birthday shindig for both DataPard and I.

However, being a financially responsible person, I haven't got the $1300+ to go: $390 for memberships, $134 for trainfare, and well over $745 for hotel (5 days at $149, plus tax), and that doesn't even count food and spending cash. That's easily a month's cushion for paying my actual bills and rent (unemployment doesn't pay it all.)

Now, if I get a job by my birthday (July 14) that pays my usual rate, I might be able to swing it. But I am not reserving any rooms, booking any train rides, or buying membership until I have the job.

Also, I will only be attending WesterCon for a day or two, unless my dealer friends are willing to sponsor DataPard and I as helpers, which I doubt - they have family for that.

So if you don't see us, that's why: I can't spend money on cons when I'm broke. I'm too midwestern pragmatic for that.

For those of you who are going, have fun, and say hello to my friends for me.

I hear you. We have WorldCon memberships already because we bought them on the installment plan; I'm waiting until the last possible second to book a hotel room and/or cancel if need be. And we only have WesterCon memberships because someone sold them to us for less than half face value, months ago.

I hope you at least made your table back at BayCon.

We made our expenses at BayCon, but only because we commuted, and didn't eat in the hotel (datapard walked over to Togos or Taco Bell for lunch.)

If this helps at all, I really admire your Midwestern pragmatism. I guess it's especially so because I used to hang around the furry fandom a lot, and they have a con imminent -- Anthrocon -- for which I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that many con goers, employed or not, will be dipping into their savings, etc.

Jesus Christ, that was a long sentence. Moar caffeine, me.

There are a lot of those in this area too. Nevermind they are sleeping in their car, they are going to A Con!!. They then end up hitting up their friends for food money.

I hear ya. I just sold a book written with Larry Niven. GOOD money. Advance is arriving too late for me to get a room even if I buy membership at the door.

Maybe Chicago.

I'm sorry. I hope you find something soon! *hugs*

Damn! Someday soon some decent employer will come along who will see how really good you are. Hang in there! Meanwhile, I know you are a really good writer who knows a lot of things. Maybe you can get some gigs on elance or one of the other freelance sites. I'm going to give SMC a thirty day trial and also try some local business site things. Stan is making good money writing and doing freelance stuff and literary agent stuff and I know you can write at least as well as he does. Just a thought. Love to you and DataPard. Mamasan
